Winstead is a small, family-owned vineyard located in Bagdad, 35 kilometres north of Hobart in Tasmania’s Southern Midlands. The 3-hectare site sits at 180 metres above sea level, with a north to northeasterly aspect and grey clay soils over carboniferous shale. Its inland location avoids coastal breezes, allowing for warm summer days, while cool autumn nights help preserve acidity and build flavour complexity. This balance of warmth and coolness allows fruit to ripen fully while retaining the purity and finesse typical of Tasmania’s cool-climate wines. Winstead employs a combination of biological and biodynamic practices in the vineyard to promote vine health, reduce disease pressure and support natural fruit development. All wines are made on site in a small, purpose-built winery by vigneron Neil Snare. With a hands-on approach from vine to bottle, Neil focuses on crafting high-quality wines that reflect the vineyard’s unique character and the seasonal conditions of each vintage. Winstead produces small volumes of elegant, site-driven wines that offer depth, structure and a clear sense of place. Each release is an authentic expression of Tasmania’s Southern Midlands and the care taken in every step of production.
